The fundamental teachings of the Buddha form the core of the Buddhist religion which is practiced in many countries all over the world today. Mercy and love for people and acknowledgement of the Ultimate truth are essential in Buddhism.
These Buddhist teachings are apparent in the rites seen in a Buddhist funeral. When a Buddhist person passes, to make sure that their soul gets to a higher level in their next life, mandatory rites should be followed. To ensure the deceased's deliverance from this life and bidding them the best for their next life, prayers are offered to invoke the good energies of the dead.
The funeral rituals begin with giving the deceased a traditional ablution. After that comes the stage of reading out from religious texts by the monks, thereby directing the soul to the path of spiritual liberation. Then the Lord Buddha's teachings that highlight the importance of kindness and concern are recited aloud by the monks. Meanwhile, the body is prepared for the final rituals. The deceased is usually offered with some money placed in his casket by the family members. This is to pay for the deceased's journey across the mythical River of Three Hells.
Then the friends and relatives pay their last respects to the deceased as the casket is placed at the altar. Visitors are required to pray for the dead person and the family and relatives give their condolences. The monks performing the rites keep reciting the sutras along with the proceedings. After the completion of recitals, people attending the ceremony bow at the altar. As the visitors begin leaving, the family members present a gift to each other to show gratitude for sharing their sorrow.
Once these rites are completed, the family members can decide to cremate or bury the body according to their family customs. The rites and rituals are a means of bringing peace and acceptance to the family members of the departed as they know their prayer offerings are directed towards elevating the status of the departed in his after life.
